With hints of Edward Hopper - and some literary acumen as well - Chen's talents extend proliferously beyond the painted canvas. Presenting re-presented photos culled from the internet, Chen creates cityscapes with an architectural lien by removing unnecessary aspects of the image: namely, people and cars. Even with street scenes of a Soylent Green variety, there remains a very human presence within the remaining image. Reproductions meant to have a sense of plein eir in origin, Chen's paintings convey both future and past within a timeless present. These are buildings and streets with undeniable personality and history.
