In a small town on the prairies, a collection of ordinary characters struggle to make sense of the perplexities of their daily lives. A none-too-talented magician suspects he is peculiar but isn’t sure how to verify it. He becomes fond of a new border in the house, recently arrived after leaving her husband. A young thrift-store clerk unsure of her future with a boyfriend whose job entails donning a bunny suit and handing out apples, finds an emotional bond with a lingering stranger. A bookstore clerk with little talent for sales spends his time penning pseudo-lyrical poetry and calling into sex chat-lines, to recite his poetry to people paid to stay on the phone. A motel clerk passes the time reading about conspiracy theories, and two hapless cops look desperately for anything remotely resembling a crime in this town barely able to whip up enough passion to cause a crime. But all these separate scenarios are about to converge…
Like a truck driver on a coffee break, red deer has a languid sense of pacing but always knows exactly where it’s headed. It is the things of little consequence that this film captures beautifully.
